There were few surprises Friday night in the City Section boys basketball playoffs, which open Saturday.

Serra defeated Birmingham, 63-40, to advance to the second round on Saturday against the winner of Sylmar and Westchester. Westchester defeated Birmingham, 73-48. Sylmar defeated Cleveland, 89-47. Taft defeated Jefferson, 77-65.

On Wednesday night, top-seeded Birmingham, which has fallen off considerably since losing to Serra in the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA title game last month, defeated St. Anthony, 54-49. Heading into Thursday night's game against Serra, Serra had fallen to New York City power Rice, which knocked off Mission League rival Chaminade. On Saturday, Serra faces the winner of Sylmar and Westchester.
