In 2016, Google made a big reveal about its plans to build a side-project called ‘Area 120.’ One year later, the company announced that it will be focusing on lightweight games to lower the power consumption of low-powered mobile devices.

So what can we expect from this initiative? Well, in a blog post, Google said that it will be adding access to new games to its in-app store this summer. In a press release, the company clarified that the games won’t be fresh titles that cost exorbitant money. These games will be produced in-house by a small team for this purpose.

It’s worth noting that the games will also be targeted at different users and different kinds of devices. One of the developers that will be taking part in the project is a small developer named Octopus Games, that was founded in 2016. For that reason, the games will differ on a platform-by-platform basis.

What makes this initiative interesting is that Google plans to put its resources behind these games in order to bring a better experience to players. Essentially, Google is looking to do the same thing as app stores that’s present on third-party platforms such as Steam and SteamOS. On top of that, the games won’t just be for Google-centric devices, but will span across both Android and Chrome OS.

It might not be an option to run a game on your Chromebook if you don’t have a powerful laptop, but Google can work on adding support for older versions of ChromeOS, or a drive-by over-the-air solution.

Project 120 will be a nice addition to Google’s diversified portfolio of initiatives. It will most likely serve to lighten the load on mobile devices, and provide a good alternative to online gaming for people who already have a Chromebook. Plus, it’s a nice way to help out developers who may have trouble garnering ad revenue and getting their games downloaded.
