Two-way football player DeShon Elliott was having one of his best offensive days when he saw him losing for the first time in coach Chris Conlin's two-year coaching tenure.

Elliott, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound senior, didn't have a hit but stole a base on a late read by outfielder Pat DeFrancesco. He later scored the winning run for defending CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion JSerra in its season opener on Friday night in Westminster.

There will be more offensive fireworks from the Lions. Their top pitching staff is so strong that Elliott can practice only on the football field. Yet he made Conlin look good.

JSerra plays at 5 p.m. today at Marlborough.
