Shohei Ohtani didn't need batting practice.

Ohtani completed it at the plate for the first time since signing with the Los Angeles Angels when he walked out to the mound to take some batting practice on Thursday and he got a sharp test drive of the street in Anaheim before he took the field.

To add to his test ride, there was a mini-bus just a few feet away and players were being driven on side streets to take batting practice.

"I'm just enjoying myself," Ohtani said through his interpreter, J.K. Shinoda. "I'm learning a lot here and the way to see the balls coming off the bat is more interesting. I'm enjoying the process, being able to feel the ball coming off the bat and just enjoying it. It was fun to see the side streets with the traffic going by."

Ohtani hit three singles and two doubles on Thursday.

"He threw today pretty well," shortstop Andrelton Simmons said. "A couple of infield hits and a couple of hits off the bat. He had a good day. I would say he's progressing well, working on his mechanics."

Extra bases

Simmons hasn't missed any action because of tendinitis in his right shoulder, which he first reported in late October. He played in the Freeway Series and said he felt fine, but his teammates noticed he was throwing harder. "I think it's just because of the velocity he's getting," Mike Trout said. ...

Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, one of the original members, received a plaque commemorating his induction into the Sports Hall of Fame at American Honda Stadium on Wednesday night. "I'm doing something I never thought I'd do, it was pretty cool to get the O.C. Cheer roll," he said.
